How a Broke Skateboarder Made $40 Million
Peter Kell is a multiple eight-figure entrepreneur and a huge source of wisdom on all things digital marketing. He's known as the "VSL King" thanks to his video sales letters that have generated tens of millions of dollars.
However, Peter didn't just land in entrepreneurial success out of nowhere. As a kid, he describes himself as a broke, D-student skateboarder who never had successful friends. In fact, he never thought a successful life was even possible.
When he graduated high school, none of the typical "successful careers" sounded appealing. He looked into what the highest paying job was, found out it was a heart surgeon, and knew that kind of career wasn't for him.
Peter stuck to what he loved: skateboarding. He got a job at a local skate shop, got sponsored by a local company, and slept on his friends' floors. Eventually, Peter realized he needed to pivot and do something else with his life, so he moved back in with his parents.
Peter's parents lived in a remote California town with little to do and he slipped into a deep depression. Now in his early 20s, Peter felt like he was missing out on something. His dad was addicted to buying "get rich quick" internet courses and he sent some to Peter.
One course was an aggressive program on marketing and the content spoke to him. The program introduced the concept of lifestyle design, which shifted Peter's mindset into wanting to create a life he loved. Money is the root of all freedom and from then on, he got motivated to make enough to live out his dreams.
Peter got committed to becoming rich in his late 20s and went all-in. He read hundreds of books on business, started and failed several ventures, and at one point even had to move back into his parents' basement. But that didn't stop him.
After hitting rock bottom, Peter discovered a book called Conversations with God that changed his life. For the first time ever, he started to realize there was a force in life much greater than him. The universe was pushing him in a new direction.
Peter started getting serious about his skills and what he was the best at. He started fine tuning his skills in marketing and advertising and landed a job as a media buyer for a local affiliate network. It was there that Peter was introduced to native advertising and he got the entrepreneurial spark to do things on his own.
Eager to keep his momentum going, Peter put together mastermind groups with other entrepreneurs. His skills started to explode from all that he was learning in real time. He connected with some of the biggest Facebook advertisers in the world who catapulted his success.
Today, Peter's dreams are now a reality. In addition to building a $40M empire (twice), he coaches entrepreneurs how to do the same.
Peter Kell
On a recent call, Peter shared tons of wisdom and insights for entrepreneurs inside the School of Hard Knocks community. Here's some of the top takeaways.
Who You're With = Who You'll Become
At one point when Peter was building his empire, he took a look at his five closest friends. They were all entrepreneurs, but they were broke. He had a goal of making $1,000 a day on the internet and none of them were doing that. He needed to find others who were.
The saying that you're the sum of the five people closest to you is true. Peter's mastermind groups with successful entrepreneurs are what ultimately helped him reach his own personal finish line. If you want to elevate your skills and grow as fast as possible, get with others who are doing the same or who are already where you want to be.
Rich Man In a Broke Man's Body
When Peter was at his lowest, he never lost sight of his dream of being rich. He convinced himself that he was just a rich man living in a broke man's body who needed to break out of the trap. He accepted the rock bottom he was in and built himself up from there.
Peter truly believed that God made him a person with choices, freedom, and someone who's making big business moves. The key to becoming who you want to be is believing that you already are that person. You just need to step up and claim the role.
Wins and Losses
Peter knows a thing or two about failure, as he lost his millionaire status twice. Because he wasn't afraid to take risks, he bounced back from seven different business failures and eventually went on to make $40M with from a skin care brand.
Your failures might take your money away, but they'll never take away your skills and abilities. Peter says he'd take financial risks over physical risks any day. It's this kind of mindset that can bring you out of any rock bottom.
